Could quaint Cobblewood Cove be a hotbed for black magic?

Genie and her ghostly great-great-aunt Adriana have been too busy with their gelato business and helping with the restoration of the old speakeasy to notice that something isn’t quite right in their small town.

Until pranks with touch of the macabre haunt the neighborhood, right before Halloween.

But it gets worse.

When a locked room murder case points straight at a connection to dark forces, the sleuthing duo fears for the living – and the not-quite so departed.

Can they root out the evil in their midst before it ends Adriana’s happy afterlife – forever?

recipe

A scoop full of happiness. Or two, or three …

There’s a gelateria close to where I live. Outside is the usual blackboard that says, “You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy ice-cream. Which is pretty much the same thing.”

I agree. Some of my happiest memories involve ice-cream sundaes, a scoop of frozen delight in a crunchy wafer cone (preferably dipped into chocolate and sprinkled with hazelnut pieces).

No wonder Genie and Adriana attended a gelato-making course on their Italian vacation and made it into a business.

The history of ice-cream is long and illustrious. It’s thought that mixing flavours with snow or ice dates back millennia, to China. In Ancient Rome Nero had ice blocks delivered, and woe to the unlucky ones who let it melt it in the warm climate before it reached the infamous emperor.

Louis XIV, Thomas Jefferson and many others loved the frozen dessert.

The addition of cream to it is much newer. Ice-boxes that kept the product cold enough were key. The breakthrough came during the first half of the 20th century, with reliable power and affordable freezers. Today, decent ice-cream machines are no longer a luxury, but you don’t need one to make your own ice-cream. All you need is time and patience. I can’t promise your results will win awards, like Genie and Adriana’s ice-cream. I can promise you it’ll be worthwhile if you love gelato.

This basic recipe can be changed adding fresh fruit or cocoa, essences and whatever you fancy. Spice it up!

Ingredients:

1 ¾ cups heavy cream

1 ¼ cups whole milk

½ cup sugar (you can use a little more, but I prefer to let fruit, ground nuts or spices come through)

1/8 tsp fine sea salt

1 tsp vanilla essence or a scraped vanilla pod

Whisk it all together until it’s well mixed and pour it into a baking pan. Put it in the freezer.

Let is set for 30-45 minutes, take it out and whisk it again. Put it back into the freezer.

Repeat at least twice after 30 minutes in the freezer.

The ice-cream should set into a soft, scoopable mix.

Ice-cream made without a machine tends to become harder after 24 hours or so. Just take it out and let it soften for 15-30 minutes before serving.

Enjoy!

About Carmen Radtke

Carmen Radtke has spent most of her life with ink on her fingers and a dangerously high pile of books and newspapers by her side.

She has worked as a newspaper reporter on two continents and always dreamt of becoming a novelist and screenwriter.

When she found herself crouched under her dining table, typing away on a novel between two earthquakes in Christchurch, New Zealand, she realised she was hooked for life.

The shaken but stirring novel made it to the longlist of the Mslexia competition, and her next book and first mystery, The Case Of The Missing Bride, was a finalist in the Malice Domestic competition in a year without a winner. Since then she has penned several more cozy mysteries, including the Jack and Frances series set in the 1930s and the Genie and Adriana Darling series.

Carmen now lives in Italy with her human and her four-legged family.
