interview with the author
- What made you start writing?
I had been writing since I was eleven or twelve years old, and I had my first piece published in a local newspaper when I was in seventh grade. From that time on, I knew I wanted to be a writer. I wrote all through high school and college (majoring in English), and when I finished, I set out to write my first book.
- How long have you been writing? When did you sell your first book?
I’ve been writing for about thirty-five years. I sold my first book to Silhouette Books when I was twenty-five.
- Why do you write?
I write because I love What-Iffing. When I see something mysterious happen in the news, I find myself trying to solve it with my own little conspiracy theories. I think, “What if this led up to that …?” And in my mind, I imagine a whole story that bears no resemblance to the real news item. I would do that even if I didn’t write, but it’s so much fun to put it down on paper and flesh it out into something someone else would like to read.
- What would you be doing with your free time if you weren’t writing?
I would probably have been a psychologist. I love analyzing people and trying to figure things out.
- What are you working on right now?
I’m starting a new series that’s a spin-off of my IF I RUN series, featuring the same characters, Casey and Dylan. I plan to do three books in the new series.
- Do you have any advice for other writers?
I think it’s important not to rush anything into publication. I work so hard on every book, taking it through multiple drafts until I almost have it memorized. Then my publisher puts it through several rounds of editing, and I rewrite a couple more times, before I finally feel like it’s finished. I think in today’s self-publishing world, it’s too tempting to skip all those steps and just get it up on the internet. It robs you of the chance to take it to the next level and achieve excellence.
- How important is faith in your books?
Since the mid-nineties, faith has been an important element in all of my books. I believe that God gave me a writing gift for a reason, and that reason is to challenge my readers spiritually, and make them examine their own faith. My characters are usually going through things that I’ve been through, and they have to learn the lessons I’ve had to learn. I really believe that God sometimes puts me through hard things so I can write about them and help my readers who are experiencing that.
- What themes do you like to write about?
I love writing about injustice, and redemption is really important to me. I like to show flawed characters in crisis, some who have made terrible messes of their lives, and show that God still isn’t finished with them. He has a plan and a purpose for them.
9. What is your favorite book you’ve written and why?
I have several favorites for different reasons. But my Intervention series has a soft spot in my heart because it was about a mother searching for her addicted daughter, who disappeared after her interventionist was murdered on the way to treatment. There were a lot of elements of my own life that went into that series. My Restoration Series (Last Light, Night Light, True Light, and Dawn’s Light), about a massive global power outage, has been a fan favorite. I also really liked my latest series, If I Run, If I’m Found, and If I Live. That was about a female fugitive, and it was so much fun to write. Readers seem to have liked it a lot.
10. What is your writing schedule like?
I’m raising my eight year old grandson, so I mainly write during school hours. I usually take about a year to write a book.
