One will rise. The other will fall.

Kent Bancroft’s rise to fame and fortune was nothing short of meteoric. Once a simple teacher in London’s East End, he’s now on course to become Britain’s youngest billionaire.

But his success has come on the back of those he’s trodden upon to get there. Among them is a man whose fall was as swift as Kent’s rise. He used to be a sparky, honest and hard-working. Now, he’s homeless, drunk, and down one leg.

And he blames Kent for everything.

Forget forgiveness. Forget turning the other cheek. And forget waiting for karma.

This is a victim who won’t stand idly by.

He wants revenge.

And he’s going to get it.

Kent Bancroft will never see him coming.

Thank you to the authors and NetGalley for allowing me to read a copy of this book in advance. My opinions are entirely my own.

I have read all the previous books by both authors and I have to say this one was a bit different to what I was used to find in their novels. But don’t misunderstand me, it was different in a good way. It was not your typical police procedural and I really enjoyed the change, since it was more character-driven and you get to know the characters much better.

The story was entertaining and intriguing. It was full of moments when you thought you were going to be able to figure out what was going to happen and then, bam! A twist would take you in a completely different direction.

I don’t want to say much because I don’t want to accidentally reveal some spoiler, but I really enjoyed the fact that the good and bad characters are not cookie-cutter and they are not 100% one thing nor the other. The good ones are not that good, and the bad ones are not that bad. That makes them more realistic and it is easier to sympathize with the different characters at different moments of the story.

Overall, a very entertaining book, quite different to any other novel from the authors, and it is perfect to enjoy over a cup of tea on a lazy weekend.

Ali Gunn kills people for a living*.

The characters in Ali’s books are the kind of strong, fearless women that every girl dreams of growing up to be.
