Dr. Mia Reid arrives on the Isle of Skye for a summer dig. She learns her friend and trusted colleague, Dr. Ethan Carter, is dead and valuable artifacts are missing.

Interpol agent and Mia’s former lover, Luke Forbes, is working the case with the police. They suspect murder and a smuggling ring.

Mia and her team uncover a treasure with ties to Bonnie Prince Charlie.
Then two students are kidnapped, forcing Mia to trade the treasure for their release. During the rescue, she finds a collection of missing artifacts.

Are the smugglers and kidnappers the same people?

Can she dig up the truth before someone else dies?

excerpt

Back at her desk, Mia turned on her computer. She called the bike shop and left a message. Opening her email account, she saw an urgent message from Ethan Carter. Mia was meeting him at the dig on the Isle of Skye in Scotland tomorrow evening.

She opened the email.

“Mia, forgive the brevity of this message. I’ve made an amazing discovery! The broch we’ve been working on has given us treasure.

I’ve found what I think is a ceremonial dagger and a ring. Both could belong to a person of wealth. I’ve attached photos.

The local historical society is excited about the finds and is bringing in the press.

And I’m not sure, but I think I’m being followed. If anything should happen to me, remember our undergrad years. Be careful.

Can’t wait to see you this week. We have much to talk about.
Ethan”

Mia opened the attachment. The handle of the dagger appeared to be metal with a design, and it had a short, serrated blade. It could be a sgian-dubh, a small single-edged knife that was worn as part of traditional Highland dress. The ring appeared to have gemstones surrounding an enormous center stone.

Her office line rang.

“Dr. Reid here.”
“Please hold for Dr. Bateman.”
She didn’t have long to wait. “Could you come to my office in twenty minutes? I have a matter we need to discuss.”

“I’ll be there.”

“See you shortly.” Dr. Bateman hung up.

Dr. Bateman’s administrative assistant, Lottie Myers, looked up as Mia stopped at her desk.

“Just knock on the door before entering.”
Mia complied with the request.
“Ah, Dr. Reid. Good, we can start.” Dr. Bateman rose and walked around to the front of the desk.
Mia glanced at the man occupying one of the chairs. She hadn’t expected to see Christopher Wilson at the meeting. She took the chair next to him.

Dr. Bateman put his glasses on and leaned against his desk. “I asked Dr. Wilson to be at this meeting. Let me get straight to the point. I’ve received word the department will have funds for one professor for the next academic year. You and Christopher are the two best candidates. A decision will be made next month with input from other members of this department.” Dr. Bateman raised his hand as Christopher Wilson started to say something. “Please let me finish. I know this is irregular, but you’re both strong candidates. Mia, I understand you’re away on a dig in Scotland for part of the summer?”

“That’s correct. I leave tonight.”
“And Christopher, you’re working locally?”
“Yes, I’m working on the Lakeview Islands.”
Dr. Bateman nodded. “Right. I expect to see you both at the fundraiser tonight at the Lakeview Museum. Members of the committee will be in attendance and will speak to you both individually.”

Mia adjusted her glasses. “Do you know when this will take place? I have to be at Pearson airport by nine thirty.”

“I’ll make certain the committee members speak with you as soon as possible. I’ll notify them of your timeline.”

“Is this an interview with the committee?” Mia asked.

“No, it’s an opportunity for them to speak with you informally.” Dr. Bateman stood.
